Sell recyclables
Recyclers will only buy material that is baled, which means pressed together and bundled into large, dense packages of equal size and density. If you don’t yet have the capacity to bale material, you will need to sell your material to an intermediate collector or buy-back centre, which bales and sells the material to a recycler. Petco does not manufacture, buy or sell any material. However, we have numerous contracted recyclers that do buy recyclable packaging. They will tell you which materials they’re interested in buying and the pricing structure for each.

Petco sponsors equipment and infrastructure to grow visible recycling
Petco supports projects with equipment and infrastructure in order to enhance working conditions and improve their collection volumes, quality and transport efficiency.
Equipment and infrastructure support includes:
- Protective equipment and clothing to protect collectors against health and safety risk
- Weighing equipment for the accurate measurement of material bought and sold
- Collection containers for storage of recovered material
- Transportation equipment like bulk bags, trailers and trolleys to help collectors service customers and get materials to buy-back centres or recyclers
- Baling equipment to help collectors consolidate and handle larger volumes of materials.
Get training and mentorship as an entrepreneur
Training and mentorship are essential for anyone wanting to start a collection business. Petco runs collector workshops and skills development training for collectors all over South Africa, helping entrepreneurs to grow and sustain their businesses. The content of these workshops includes waste identification, sorting and transportation of recyclables.
We also work on the bigger picture.
We understand the need to raise awareness in communities and strengthen relationships with government in order to encourage people to start collecting recyclables at home, establish collection projects and expanding collection opportunities into new areas.
Our goal is to see everyone made more aware of the importance of collecting, sorting and recycling.
We sign a contract
Petco enters into signed contracts with all sponsorship recipients, and monitors them on a monthly basis to track growth. The contract makes clear exactly what is expected of both parties, and the monitoring helps us understand how we can best support your growth and sustainability.
