The role of Petco for government
For South Africa’s circular economy to thrive, it is essential that every stakeholder plays their part.
An important partnership in this context is the one between a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) like Petco and the various tiers of government. A successful partnership between these two role-players can yield effective, sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and society.
National level
We collaborate with the national government departments on policy development and implementation to enhance waste management efforts, and the robust execution of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Provincial level
At the provincial level, we partner to create localised programmes for efficient collection and recycling, aligning resources and expertise for region-specific waste solutions.
Local level
We actively engage with local and district municipalities, supporting various collection and recycling projects and clean-up campaigns, and offering our Municipal Support Programme for Material Recovery Facilities, along with training and the development of separation-at-source initiatives.
The EPR schemes we administer
We take on part of our members Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging placed on the market by administering EPR schemes for PET (polyethylene terephthalate) rigid containers, specifically bottles and jars, and their associated polyolefin labels and closures, as well as liquid board packaging (LBP).
Our work
All of the work that Petco does is to ensure that our producer members meet the legislated recycling targets set out in Section 18 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA).
We are committed to collaborating with national and provincial tiers of government on legislation and plans and cooperating with municipalities to enhance the recovery of specified products from municipal waste. We are also committed to focussing on integrating informal waste pickers into the post-consumer collection value chain, and working towards ensuring compensation for those who register on the South African Waste Picker Registration System (SAWPRS).
