Navigating your role with ease

As a valued Petco member, your commitment to Petco’s EPR schemes is pivotal. From paying your Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees and improving product design to holding us accountable, your role, just like ours, goes beyond compliance. Explore your responsibilities as a Petco member.

Pay your EPR fees

Timeous payment of your EPR fees and declarations of your placed on market volumes contributes to compliance with regulations and effective implementation of Petco’s EPR schemes – our fees are calculated on transparent plans that are a reflection of costs applicable for a robust EPR scheme.

Use recycled material in your products

Incorporating recycled content into your packaging is not only a requirement by the legislation*, but it also contributes to resource conservation, ensures the sustainability of end-use markets and creates awareness about the role of recycled material.

*Please consult the regulations to assess the requirements for your identified products

Design your products to be collected and recycled

Designing for circularity and ensuring compatibility with local recycling infrastructure minimises environmental impact, creates income opportunities for collectors and prevents packaging from ending up in landfills, fostering a circular economy and responsible resource management.

Improve product labelling

Implement environmental labels and declarations of the identified products aligned with the SANS 14021 and 14024 standards within a period of three years.

Ensure accountability

Hold accountability of the PRO for the operation and performance of the EPR schemes. As members, it is your responsibility to meet legislated targets and ensure that through the EPR scheme the waste generated by the products placed onto the market is effectively managed.

Carry out a life cycle assessment

Conduct a life cycle assessment of all your identified products in accordance with the applicable standards within five years of implementing your EPR scheme. As a minimum, focus on the following: minimisation of material used in the identified product; design of the product to facilitate reuse, recycling or recovery without compromising its functionality; and the reduction of environmental toxicity once the product enters the post-consumer waste stream.
