In the heart of Driftsands, the members of Sokhana Sicoce Waste Co-operative are demonstrating how determination, collaboration and community action can drive meaningful change.
Drawing on their collective experience in the waste sector, the co-operative has steadily grown its operations over time. From securing space for sorting activities to improving material quality and building relationships within their community, they have remained committed to diverting valuable recyclables from landfill while creating opportunities for themselves and others.
The co-operative's members collect recyclable materials by hand throughout the community before sorting and preparing them for sale. Working with limited resources, they have developed practical solutions along the way, even compacting materials manually to maximise storage space and improve transport efficiency.
Recognising the importance of education in building a circular economy, Sokhana Sicoce has also begun engaging with local schools to promote responsible waste management and recycling. Their goal is not only to recover recyclable materials but also to foster environmental awareness among learners and community members.
Petco recently joined Sokhana Sicoce during a visit to Mzamomtsha Primary School, one of two schools currently participating in the co-operative's pilot materials recovery initiative. The visit highlighted the value of partnerships between schools, communities and the recycling sector in creating sustainable change.
The impact of these engagements was evident in the words of one participant, who shared:
"Now I look at the world differently. When I see a carton, I think, 'Yes, I know this!' And I know Petco. Then I think to myself, this is a good business to be in."
His reflection illustrates how education and awareness can shift perspectives, helping people recognise the value of materials that might otherwise be discarded.
Sokhana Sicoce's work is a powerful example of how local action can create broader impact. Through collaboration, perseverance and a shared commitment to their community, the co-operative is helping to build a more resilient and connected Driftsands one recyclable item at a time.
