SA Plastics Pact sets ambitious targets for 2030

Petco was honoured to attend the launch of the South African Plastics Pact's 2030 Targets in June, marking an important milestone in South Africa's transition towards a more circular economy for plastics.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards the Pact's 2025 targets while setting an ambitious course for the decade ahead. As the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Willie Aucamp, noted, the launch of the SA Plastics Pact 2030 is "a declaration of intent to achieve more”.

The 2030 targets include the following:

  • Target 1: A 20% intensity reduction in virgin fossil-fuel-based packaging through increased recycled content, addressing problematic items, and introducing widespread reuse/refill systems.
  • Target 2: 100% of rigid plastic packaging to be designed for recyclability.
  • Target 3: 70% of flexible plastic packaging to be designed for recyclability.
  • Target 4: Achieving a 55% output recycling rate for plastic packaging.

One of the Pact's greatest successes has been its ability to bring together stakeholders from across the plastics value chain. Meaningful progress is only possible through collaboration, and the Pact continues to demonstrate the value of partnerships between industry, government, and civil society in driving practical solutions to shared sustainability challenges.

As a producer responsibility organisation, Petco remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance circularity, strengthen collection and recycling systems, and create positive environmental and socio-economic outcomes.

We congratulate the South African Plastics Pact, its Steering Committee, members and supporting organisations on this important achievement, and thank Minister Aucamp, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, WWF South Africa and GreenCape for their continued leadership and support.

As we look towards 2030, we are encouraged by the collective commitment across the sector to accelerate innovation, increase collaboration, and deliver meaningful impact for South Africa's circular economy.
