Your responsibility as a producer
Register on the SAWIC website
Register with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on the South African Waste Information Centre (SAWIC) website.
Ensure accountability
Be accountable for the operation and performance of your EPR scheme. It is the responsibility of producers to meet legislated targets and ensure that through the EPR scheme the waste generated by the products placed onto the market is effectively managed.
Establish or join an EPR scheme
Improve product labelling
Implement environmental labels and declarations of the identified products aligned with the SANS 14021 and 14024 standards within a period of three years.
Carry out a life cycle assessment
Conduct a life cycle assessment of all your identified products in accordance with the applicable standards within five years of implementing your EPR scheme. As a minimum, focus on the following: minimisation of material used in the identified product; design of the product to facilitate reuse, recycling or recovery without compromising its functionality; and the reduction of environmental toxicity once the product enters the post-consumer waste stream.
