To accelerate the collection of liquid board packaging (LBP), we recently hosted a successful activation event at Mpact Recycling in Midrand, which waste pickers, buy-back centre owners, and Mpact employees attended. Our main focus was to increase awareness around the collection of these cartons, while we also explained the LBP recycling process and its end-use markets, i.e. what these cartons can become once recycled.

To incentivise collection, the attendees were given prepaid airtime, bulk bags, and custard – depending on how many cartons they brought in. For us, it was encouraging to hear one of the waste pickers say that ever since Petco started with its incentive campaign, they have increased the volume of LBP they have collected and that many are now prioritising the collection of these cartons.
