Thembisile Hani

Petco initiated a collaborative effort with the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, to support the local community of Kwaggafontein. This support involved providing an industrial platform scale and assisting 15 waste pickers in the area. The initiative’s primary stakeholders were the waste pickers and the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality. The desired outcome of this initiative was to enable the 15 waste pickers to start operating within the municipality’s previously un-operational landfill recycling facility. By doing so, the initiative aimed to improve waste management practices in the area and enhance recycling efforts, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible community.

Lekwa

The initiative involved the organization of a recycling workshop for the Lekwa Local Municipality in Standerton, located in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The workshop brought together a total of 74 attendees, including stakeholders such as representatives from DARDLEA (Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs), Lekwa Local Municipality, Plastic SA, waste pickers, Buyback Centres, and unemployed youth. The main objective of this initiative was to enhance the capacity and knowledge of both waste pickers and government officials in both urban and rural areas within the Lekwa Local Municipality regarding recycling practices. The desired outcome was to empower and educate the participants, ultimately leading to improved recycling efforts and practices in the region, thereby contributing to more sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management.

Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality

The municipal engagement initiative, held at the Shalimar Park Community Hall in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, aimed to foster collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality (DM), and Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

The primary objective was to assist in developing and implementing the Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) with a focus on recycling strategies. To address the need for awareness, Petco organised a targeted recycling workshop for waste collectors, Small, Medium, and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs), and buy back centres, contributing to enhanced awareness and understanding of collection and recycling practices and sustainable waste management in the community.
