Part of National government’s role is to enforce regulations related to waste management and to put appropriate monitoring mechanisms in place, ensuring that producers comply with their obligations through participation in or establishment of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme.

As a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), Petco collaborates with national government on policy development. We help producers to be accountable for the products they place on the market by developing and implementing effective EPR schemes on their behalf.

Petco works with provincial government to develop localised programmes to support EPR. Our goal is to ensure efficient collection and recycling, and to align objectives, resources and expertise to promote effective, region-specific waste management solutions.

Local and district municipal engagements have always been important to us. We work with municipalities to support collection, sorting and recycling projects. These include separation-at-source projects, recycling workshops, accredited training, clean-up campaigns, exhibitions and other joint activities. We also review their Industry Waste Management Plans (IWMPs).

Typically, local municipalities are responsible for waste collection from households and businesses, including providing readily accessible infrastructure. PROs can assist municipalities to fulfil this obligation.
