A new eco-hub in Ga-Motholo village, Mankweng, is creating practical opportunities for Limpopo communities to turn trash into treasure.

Petco recently supported the launch alongside a local waste management and skills development company, marking progress towards more community-led recycling solutions in the region.

The organisation works across Limpopo and the Northern Cape, equipping unemployed individuals with skills in managing waste and creating eco-friendly products. Its app also connects residents and businesses with waste collectors, helping to improve collection and strengthen local recycling systems.

The eco-hub will serve as a space for upcycling, environmental education and small business development, with a focus on driving green job creation.

The launch event brought together 74 participants, including community members and local SMMEs. Activities included interactive education sessions, live waste-to-value demonstrations, an exhibition of commonly used plastics in upcycling, and a tree planting initiative.

Ultimately, the goal is for the eco-hub to be community driven, but it will be supported by stakeholders such as the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Limpopo, local and district municipalities, the University of Limpopo, and the Bjatladi Traditional Council.
