Building stronger recycling networks in Gauteng

Petco recently teamed up with the Gauteng Department of Economic Development to host two lively, hands-on workshops – one at Unisa’s Daveyton Campus and another at Kokosi Pay Point. Local residents, waste pickers, and co-ops came together to share ideas, learn more about collection and recycling, and explore how each of us can help build a stronger, more circular economy.

Why should this matter to you? Because recycling works best when everyone’s involved – from your home sorting bin to local buy-back centres, retailers and packaging designers. Events like these show how government, communities, and industry can work side by side to grow local recycling networks and create real opportunities.

Petco also joined an exciting session hosted by the National Cleaner Production Centre in Kempton Park, where businesses and recyclers brainstormed new ways to collaborate and cut waste.

Workshops like the recent gatherings at the two Unisa sites and at Kempton Park create practical spaces for learning about how collection and recycling can become more profitable and sustainable.

Collectors at the workshops learned how to:

  • increase their earnings by understanding the types of waste most in demand and how to sort and prepare materials for higher prices.
  • find reliable buyers, including buy-back centres who value their role and offer fair payment.
  • gain access to support and resources like training, equipment, and advice to help their businesses grow.
  • strengthen their role in the circular economy, which means reducing waste in the environment while creating ongoing income.

The workshops underscore the role of every stakeholder in building a circular economy from the ground up.

Soon after our Unisa visit, Petco attended the National Cleaner Production Centre’s Industrial Symbiosis Programme in Kempton Park. The event drew 66 participants, from municipal and national government to waste service providers and buy-back centres.

The programme highlights how industrial collaboration can deliver environmental, social, and economic value for entire communities. For Petco, it was an ideal opportunity to connect with like-minded partners and support South Africa’s shift toward a lower-carbon, more resource-efficient economy.

Together, these efforts are expanding Gauteng’s recycling network and building momentum where it matters most.
