In June, Petco proudly joined fellow organisations and youth who are involved and interested in the sustainability agenda at the Green Youth Indaba 2025 in Durban. Over five vibrant days, the Indaba became a powerful platform for real conversations, practical action, and shared solutions to the challenges of waste management, recycling and sustainability.

Cleaning up, one bag at a time

Youth Day 2025 kicked off with purpose as Petco took to Blue Lagoon Beach for a mass clean-up campaign. Together with the Green Youth Network, Ethekwini Metro, local waste collection businesses, and enthusiastic young volunteers, we collected bags of litter and shared stories about why responsible waste management is important for both people and the planet.

Our on-the-ground team, banners and sponsored clear collection bags were a visible reminder that small actions, multiplied across communities, create real impact. Witnessing our partners,  local youth-led collection businesses, such as Mdlume Waste Management Solutions and Jola Family Solutions, in action was both inspiring and affirming.

Skills for a growing waste economy

Next, we joined the Wastepreneur Masterclass at The Station in Durban, where young waste collectors gathered to strengthen their business skills and knowledge. Petco shared practical insights into how small-scale collectors can grow their operations, apply for  equipment support, and become environmental entrepreneurs who contribute meaningfully to the circular economy.

With branded goodie bags in hand, attendees left not only with new contacts, but with renewed confidence in their ability to build sustainable businesses around recycling.

Spotlighting youth innovation

The final days of the Indaba brought a hive of activity to the Durban ICC, where Petco added our voice to a panel discussion, hosted an exhibition stand, engaged with government and private-sector partners, and connected with hundreds of passionate young visitors. The Green Youth Innovators Pitch Competition was a particular highlight, showcasing creative new ideas for recycling, packaging and circular solutions — and Petco was proud to sponsor prizes for the winners.

Throughout the week, our presence reflected more than just participation. It was a chance to amplify awareness about extended producer responsibility (EPR), highlight career opportunities in the recycling sector, connect with potential new partners and listen to the fresh perspectives of South Africa’s youth.

We left Durban energised by the passion and innovation we encountered. The Green Youth Indaba 2025 proved once again that when young people lead, a societal shift is not only possible — it is already happening.
