Since 2004, Petco has been working consistently to earn public and industry trust as an effective producer responsibility organisation (PRO) for the collection and recycling of post-consumer polyethylene (PET) packaging.

Building on our successful record in supporting the PET value chain, we have now expanded our offering to include a NEW extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme for Liquid Board Packaging (LBP) and welcomed our first member, Tetra Pak South Africa, this year.

Together, we will drive the collection and recycling of LBP in South Africa!

Consumers will recognise LBP as the paperboard cartons in which your long-life milk, fruit juice and custard are sold. LBP is an environmentally sound packaging choice because of paperboard:

• is made from renewable materials,
• can be recycled,
• is easy and safe to transport,
• and helps to prevent food waste.

Tetra Pak cartons are designed to be recycled wherever collection systems are in place. For this to work, we need consumers to sort and separate their clean recyclables – including their PET bottles and LBP cartons – from their general household waste. When LBP is recycled, it can be transformed into a wide range of new products, such as paper and building materials.

For Petco, it is absolutely the right fit – there is existing recycling capacity and infrastructure in place, and several of our members sell products in both PET and LBP. So, we look forward to assisting them with their EPR compliance and welcoming more brands on board to maximise our impact!
