This Women’s Day, Petco hosted 100 women waste pickers at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens for a gathering focused on their wellbeing, development and role in South Africa’s circular economy.

The day created space for conversations on financial wellness, personal care, purpose and empowerment, while giving the women an opportunity to connect and be celebrated.

We were joined by some inspiring speakers who brought different perspectives to the day. First up, Petco CEO Telly Chauke welcomed the women and shared why we brought them together, highlighting the role they play in the value chain and reminding them: we see you, we support you, and you matter.

Also on the programme, Tracy Kotzen highlighted the value of self-care and the importance of making time for yourself while supporting others, while the Gauteng Department of Health focused on physical health, particularly given the demands of waste picking.

Nonto Sibisi encouraged the women to work with pride, to not be defined by their past and to stay rooted in their faith. Rounding out the speakers, Queen Mangaye from Taking Care of Business motivated the audience to attend to their financial wellbeing, drawing on her own journey of personal development and financial freedom.
