We’ve been busy in Limpopo recently! In the Vhembe district, we teamed up with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to support the launch of an e-waste project in Limpopo’s Vhembe District Municipality.
While Petco focuses on PET and LBP, we believe that all recyclable material collection is important and applaud projects like this that also divert electronic components from landfill.
In meetings with community members at Thulamela and Collins Chabane local municipalities, we encouraged them to support the e-waste initiative, and also used the opportunity to explain the importance of recycling PET and LBP, and the income-earning potential these materials represent.
Supporting the DFFE on events like these highlights the value of working together to drive a recycling mindset amongst South Africa’s communities.
We were able to engage directly with local residents – explaining the dos and don’ts of recycling, and where to sell what they collect.
The DFFE thanked Petco for bringing staff, sharing educational materials, and sponsoring giveaway items – all of which helped the two days leave a lasting impact. The response from the people who attended was also overwhelmingly positive – a reminder that support really makes a difference.
In the months to come, Petco is looking forward to continuing its collaboration with the DFFE and local municipalities to grow recycling efforts across South Africa.
