Recycling finds safe harbour

It’s all hands on deck for a community recycling initiative at Hout Bay Harbour, with PETCO coming aboard with the sponsorship of a converted shipping container.

The container acts as a secure drop-off and separation facility for the JunkStars programme, a recycling swop shop for underprivileged youth. Every Saturday morning, the children bring their bags of collected recyclables, which are sorted, weighed and assigned a value in points. The youngsters then swop these points for their choice of groceries, toiletries or stationery for school.

The non-profit initiative is keeping this tourism hotspot clean, and with the Blue Bay 2030 campaigners working towards international Blue Flag marina status for the harbour by 2030, recycling awareness has become a critical element of this drive.
