PETCO judges the 2016 Mhluzi Recycling Competition

PETCO and Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) have partnered to support the collection of recyclables as well as raising awareness of the importance of recycling in schools in the Middleburg Mpumalanga area.

The main focus of the program is to encourage learners to collect recyclables such as PET, paper and cans for recycling. The school that collects the most recyclable material are awarded a prize at the end of the competition, which is a way to incentivise the learners to have fun while keeping their schools and surrounding areas clean.

Four schools were selected to participate in the project – Mthombeni Primary, Reatlegile Primary, Mhluzi Primary school, and Thushanang Primary School – and they competed by collecting recyclables, writing essays on the importance of recycling, as well as creating art with an environmental message.

The schools negotiated with local shopping centres and housing complexes to place PETCO-sponsored bulk bags on their premises for the collection of recyclables. The schools also got involved in various clean-up campaigns in busy areas, such as the Middleburg central business district.

The schools collectively collected more than 14 tonnes of recyclables per week! The prize money will contribute toward any urgent needs that the schools may have, such as desks, sports facilities for learners, ablution blocks, any other renovation needs, etc.

Well done to all the winners.
