Joburg City Clean-Up

On Sunday, 17 September 2017, a group of locals will be taking to the streets of inner Johannesburg to pick up litter. PETCO is supporting this initiative and here’s why YOU should too!

The Joburg City Clean-up aims to aims to attract the Johannesburg running community, local businesses and organizations to explore their city by cleaning up the city centre. This clean-up will take place exactly one week before the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN, which means the city will be squeaky-clean for runners to experience everything the City of Joburg has to offer.

PETCO is getting involved by donating bags and gloves for the clean-up. We will also be donating school desks made out of recycled plastic to a local school, in partnership with our partners Extrupet and Blake Dyason, the man behind the big beach clean-up in Cape Town earlier this year.

PETCO is thrilled to be supporting the Joburg City Clean-up. We believe clean-ups have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that key resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling. By having more people active in the recycling movement, more bottles will be collected – creating jobs and saving landfill space and carbon emissions in the process – and recycled into jeans and t-shirts, or duvets and pillows, or even into new bottles.

So make sure to join us for the Big Joburg City Clean-Up!
